A wave-rider buoy found on Sable Island in March 2001. Such buoys, used to measure wave heights offshore, are deployed by Coastal Ocean Associates to provide sea state information to the offshore energy industry. The buoys are anchored, but occasionally one breaks its mooring and washes ashore on the island. The buoy has an array of eight solar panels - visible under the clear plastic dome - which charge the battery. The battery powers the sensors, the radio transmitter and flashing light. |
