This small felt horse – representing Sable Island's Red Star – was made by Gwyneth Jones. In a technique called “needle felting” (a fine barbed needle is used to push and tangle the fibres together) Gwyneth used wool from a variety of sheep – Clun Forest, North Country Cheviots and Leicesters - raised on her farm, Nant y Mor, in Noel Shore, Nova Scotia. Leicester wool was used for the mane and tail because it is long and wavy, and the figure was coloured – to represent Red Star’s reddish chestnut coat - with dye made from onions skins and lichens. .
